Texas-Sized Holiday Delights: A State-Famous Christmas Extravaganza

Even Christmas lights are bigger in Texas. Every year, a small town in North Texas named Mineral Wells celebrates the holiday season with a record-breaking display of Christmas lights. For over two decades, Mineral Wells has hosted the “Wonderland of Lights,” a spectacle that attracts tens of thousands of visitors from across the country.

The event has become a staple of the small town’s charm, with more than 4 million lights, 100 life-sized animated animals, and over 300 holiday displays lining the 1.5-mile route of its scenic train tour. Each year, new and improved lights are added, ensuring that visitors have a magical experience.

While other towns have holiday light displays, Mineral Wells’ Wonderland of Lights is distinct for its grandeur and dedication to community spirit. The town’s residents have made it their mission to outdo themselves year after year, pouring their time, effort, and resources into making the Wonderland of Lights an unforgettable experience for visitors.

During the event, attendees can also enjoy a hot chocolate bar, cookie decorating station, and letters to Santa letters from the jolly old man himself. Admission is free, with a donation to the Mineral Wells Parks and Recreation Department in lieu of ticket fees.

Despite its modest size, Mineral Wells’ Wonderland of Lights has achieved an impressive recognition. In 2018, the event received the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Texas Treasure Award for outstanding contributions to tourism. Each year, TxDOT bestows this prestigious award on projects and initiatives that promote tourism, preserve history, and foster economic growth.

Come Christmas time, the residents of Mineral Wells pull out all stops to create an unparalleled holiday celebration that leaves all visitors in awe. So pack up the car, grab your holiday cheer, and get ready to experience Christmas in a bigger way – the Texas way, that is!
