Americans are Losing Interest in Sex, Study Reveals
A recent government study has found that Americans are losing interest in sex, with a significant increase in sexlessness among young adults. The study, conducted by the National Survey of Family Growth, found that rates of sexlessness are climbing among adults aged 22 to 34, with 10% of young males and 7% of young females reporting that they are still virgins.
The study also found that the number of young people saying they haven’t had sex recently or in the past year has grown. For young adult males, sexlessness has roughly doubled over the last 10 years, while for young adult females, it has risen by roughly 50%.
The survey, which is conducted annually by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, collects data on bedroom behavior and reproductive health habits. The study found that 24% of males aged 22-34 had not had sex in the year 2022-2023, up from 9% in 2013-15. For females, the number was 13%, up from 8%.
When asked if they’d had sex in the last three months, 35% of men said no, a big jump from 20%. Women didn’t fare much better, with 31% concurring, up from 21%.
Experts from the Institute of Family Studies say that the decline in marriage is a major driver of declining sexual activity. The study found that married people have more sex, and for most young adults, marriage is occurring later or not at all. As a result, sex is declining.
The study also found that the pandemic was a factor in the decline in sexual activity, but it was not the sole cause. Other factors, such as the decline in marriage and the increase in people living alone, also played a role.
The study’s findings have implications for public health and relationships. It highlights the need for further research into the decline in sexual activity and the factors that contribute to it.
