New York Yankees Fall Short in Pursuit of Juan Soto, Mets Land Star Player in 15-Year, $765 Million Deal
The New York Yankees’ efforts to sign prized MLB free agent Juan Soto have come up short. Soto has agreed to a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets, according to multiple reports. The 26-year-old phenom will leave the Bronx for Queens, one of the biggest and shrewdest moves the Mets have made in several years.
The Yankees offered Soto $760 million over 16 years, but he ultimately turned down their deal, as well as offers from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays. The richest contract in professional sports will see Soto join a Mets lineup that features perennial MVP candidate Francisco Lindor.
Soto was acquired by the Yankees in a blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres last winter. He hit.288 with a.989 OPS and a career-high 41 home runs, leading the American League with 128 runs scored and earning his fourth All-Star selection. Despite his impressive performance, the Yankees fell short in their World Series hopes, losing to the Dodgers in five games.
