The woman who stowed away on a Delta flight from New York to Paris last month was taken into custody again after trying to sneak into Canada, multiple law enforcement sources told CNN. Svetlana Dali cut off her ankle monitor on Sunday and boarded a Greyhound bus to Canada, where she was taken into custody on Monday.
Dali is now in FBI custody and is expected to be turned over to US Marshals in Buffalo, New York, on Tuesday. She is facing charges of bail jumping and could face up to five years in federal prison. Dali is a US permanent resident and Russian national who was previously charged with one count of being a stowaway on a vessel or aircraft without consent.
After her release without bail in November, Dali’s attorney, Michael Schneider, argued that she was not a serious flight risk and could return to her usual activities, including living in Philadelphia with an acquaintance. However, Dali has now breached her conditions, including her curfew, and her whereabouts were not known when her roommate reported her missing.
According to law enforcement sources, Dali was able to sneak onto the Paris-bound flight at New York’s JFK International Airport by avoiding TSA security officials and airline employees, hiding in a bathroom and staying undiscovered until the plane landed. She was later detained by French police and ordered to be sent back to the US.
Dali has been in the United States for an unknown length of time and has been involved in previous legal incidents, including two lawsuits filed in recent months alleging military-grade chemical weapons and kidnapping.
