Upgrade Sequel TV Show May No Longer Be Happening, Says Director Leigh Whannell
Leigh Whannell, the writer and director of the 2018 sci-fi action movie Upgrade, has seemingly confirmed that a sequel to the film is no longer in the works. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Whannell compared the fate of Upgrade to that of another one of his projects, The Invisible Man, stating that he would be happy to let Upgrade “bubble away as this cult movie” rather than make a follow-up.
Whannell’s comments come as a surprise, as previously, it was reported that he was teaming up with Tim Walsh to develop a TV show expansion of the movie. The show was set to follow the story of STEM, the AI that had taken over Grey’s body in the original film, as well as a new host and its use in the government’s fight against crime.
The original movie, which starred Logan Marshall-Green, explored the theme of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on society. The film’s ending left many questions unanswered, leaving fans curious about the possibilities of a sequel or TV show. However, Whannell’s comments suggest that this is not a project that he is currently pursuing.
It’s worth noting that the studio, Universal Pictures, still holds the rights to the movie, which means that it’s possible that the project could still move forward without Whannell’s involvement. However, for now, it appears that fans of Upgrade will have to be content with the movie’s cult status rather than a sequel or TV show.
