Travel + Leisure Co. CEO Mike Brown Speaks Out on Recent Flight Cancellations and Delays
A massive winter storm brought chaos to the United States on Monday, resulting in over 1,000 flight cancellations and hundreds of delays. According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, a total of 1,339 flights were canceled, with 606 delayed, as of 6:45 a.m. ET.
Southwest Airlines took the brunt of the impact, canceling 265 flights, while American Airlines canceled 176. Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. was also severely affected, with 234 flights canceled, accounting for 58% of all scheduled flights.
The National Weather Service warned that for locations receiving the highest snow totals, the event may be the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade. The storm brought winter storm warnings and advisories to more than a dozen states, from Kansas and Missouri to New Jersey.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a snow emergency until at least the end of the day on Tuesday, while Maryland Governor Wes Moore issued a state of emergency and urged residents to avoid traveling. As the storm moves into the mid-Atlantic region, it’s expected to bring heavy snow and ice, with authorities advising caution and preparation.
