Eggs May Be Expensive Forever Due to Avian Influenza Outbreak

Ad

The COVID-19 pandemic has already presented numerous challenges in the food sector, and an ongoing avian influenza outbreak is showing no signs of slowing down in the United States. As bird flu cases multiply, the possibility of eggs and poultry products skyrocketing in price has become more plausible.

Farms and consumers alike are in a state of high alert after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a record high of 234 avian flu cases in early February. Infected birds display symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and congestion, ultimately causing widespread death tolls.

Producers are trying to stay above water by bolstering biosecurity measures, ensuring the cleanliness and safety of all facilities. Moreover, vaccination procedures are being revised to prevent contamination and transmission rates. In-house protocols have gone into effect on a national basis, including an increase in workers’ training. In some rare cases, dead birds are having to be rapidly incinerated to prevent scavenging diseases.

Consumers, however, are being less optimistic about meeting the increasing market demand. Price increases have surfaced in many outlets, including store shelves and internet-based sales systems. Eggs especially are expected to continue rising further due to current shortages and poultry deaths. Eggs have already had a significant market value, due to factors ranging from global disease outbreaks to logistical disruptions. Since 2021, egg exports have decreased for several months from their normal growth.

Farm to table, all segments of supply chain management are facing real-time pressures; production costs alone are projected to increase. Not to mention costs for vaccines administration, which come at a steeper price since these outbreaks typically spread faster throughout a farm yard.

Avian influenza outbreaks frequently happen during different times of year. Some times are worse. As for experts, there won’t be signs of an exact timeline when price hikes will fall back to historical norms. Industry professionals predict significant adjustments to remain in place from 2025 onwards.

On a final count, this latest outbreak may contribute to an atmosphere of permanent sky-high egg expenses.
