Wicked: Uncovering the Secret Lives of Oz Characters

The magical world of Oz is expanding, and the story is getting a prequel! “Wicked” brings us back to the beginning, before Dorothy’s famous journey down the Yellow Brick Road. The story delves into the life of Elphaba, a smart and fiery young witch with green skin, who is destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West.

As we explore Oz’s past, we’re introduced to a new cast of characters. The Wizard of Oz himself is revealed to be a power-hungry and manipulative ruler, more interested in maintaining his control over the land than in truly helping its inhabitants. We meet Glinda, a spoiled and popular sorceress who becomes Elphaba’s rival and nemesis.

Fiyero, a charming prince who will eventually become Elphaba’s love interest, makes his debut. The enigmatic Doctor Dillamond, a wise and compassionate creature who can transform into various animals, provides guidance and support to Elphaba. Madame Morrible, a wicked (pun intended) governess, serves as Elphaba’s caretaker and later becomes a powerful sorceress in her own right.

We also see the origins of Oz’s beloved Munchkins, who are depicted as living in a harsh, labor-intensive environment under the Wizard’s rule. Their rebellion against the Wizard, led by the courageous Boq, is a pivotal part of the story.

Through Elphaba’s journey, we gain a deeper understanding of her transformation from a misunderstood outcast to the Wicked Witch of the West. The novel masterfully weaves a narrative that challenges our initial perceptions of these iconic characters, presenting a complex and multifaceted world that defies easy categorization.

In “Wicked,” Gregory Maguire offers a compelling exploration of themes such as prejudice, acceptance, and the blurred lines between good and evil. With its richly detailed world-building and memorable characters, this prequel has captivated readers and paved the way for a successful Broadway adaptation.
