President-elect Trump floats Wayne Gretzky as Prime Minister candidate
President-elect Donald Trump floated hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as a potential candidate to replace Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister in a social media post. Trump wrote: “I said, ‘Why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.” He added that Gretzky had no interest, but believes the people of Canada should start a “Draft Wayne Gretzky” movement.
Trump made the post amidst pressure on Trudeau to step down, following Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s resignation earlier this month and opposition leader Jagmeet Singh calling for Trudeau to resign. Conservative opposition has demanded an election.
