Nickel Boys: The Upcoming Historical Drama Gaining Oscars Buzz
The highly-anticipated historical drama Nickel Boys is generating strong Oscar buzz following its successful premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in August, accompanied by a Golden Globe nomination. The movie is set to be released in theaters on December 13, 2024, in New York City, with additional locations to be announced.
Based on the novel “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead, the film tells the story of two Black teenagers, Elwood Curtis and Turner, as they attempt to survive at an abusive boys’ school called Nickel Academy in Jim Crow-era Florida. The movie also features a star-studded supporting cast, including Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Hamish Linklater, and Daveed Diggs, among others.
Filmed in 2022 in Louisiana, the movie was shot entirely in first-person perspective, giving audiences an immersive experience. Fortunately for fans, the Amazon MGM Studios film will be released in theaters before becoming available on streaming and digital platforms.
After its theatrical release, Nickel Boys is expected to be available on MGM+ in April 2025 and on Prime Video in May 2025. Additionally, the film will likely be released on digital in mid-January 2025, giving audiences a chance to watch it from the comfort of their own homes.
