Sam Darnold is Positioning Himself for a Lucrative Free Agency in 2025
Sam Darnold has made a strong case to be the most sought-after quarterback in free agency next year. His impressive performance in his seventh year in the league has exceeded expectations, showcasing the dominant traits that earned him a top-3 draft selection. Under the guidance of head coach Kevin O’Connell, Darnold has consistently performed well, making big plays and finding easy targets when necessary.
Offensive coordinator Wes Phillips believes that Darnold’s impressive play has likely sealed his fate in Minnesota, making him a “sought-after” free agent. Phillips also noted that Darnold has “proven the doubters” and can play in the league, no longer having to prove himself.
Darnold’s impressive stats have seen him break his career highs in passing touchdowns (28) and passer rating (108.1), while ranking in the top-8 among qualifying quarterbacks in several categories. He also leads the NFL with 11 games with a 100-plus passer rating, a feat achieved by only five players since 1950.
In the past, Darnold struggled under pressure, but he has since improved significantly, whether it’s getting the ball out quickly or escaping pressure to find big plays. His ability to do so has led to a 130.3 passer rating under pressure in his last two games.
The Vikings’ willingness to possibly franchise tag quarterback J.J. McCarthy in 2025 would be no guarantee of retaining Darnold’s services, as he is likely to price himself out of the market. Nevertheless, his improvement has earned him a spot as the top quarterback on every free agent board, making him a desired commodity in the upcoming offseason.
