Video: Tapper Presses Rick Scott Over His Support of Hegseth
Tapper: So, Senator Scott, you recently praised Pete Hegseth, the CEO of Concerned Veterans for National Security, as a “real American hero.” Now, Hegseth has a history of making statements that are at odds with established facts and has promoted conspiracy theories. Can you explain why you’re associating yourself with someone like this?
Scott: Well, I think Pete Hegseth is a very important voice in this country. He’s a real patriot, and he’s got a lot of insight on national security issues.
Tapper: But don’t you think that when you praise someone like Pete Hegseth, who has a history of promoting conspiracy theories and making statements that are not supported by facts, you’re contributing to the erosion of trust in our institutions?
Scott: I don’t think that’s what I’m doing. I think what I’m doing is bringing people together to talk about the issues that matter. And I think Pete Hegseth is a real asset in that regard.
Tapper: But doesn’t his association with groups like the Proud Boys, who have been involved in violent white supremacist activities, give you pause? Doesn’t it concern you that you’re aligning yourself with someone who is connected to these groups?
Scott: I don’t think that’s accurate. I think Pete Hegseth is a patriot who wants to make this country better. And I’m willing to work with him to get things done.
Tapper: But doesn’t your association with Hegseth undermine your efforts to reach out to people who are moderate and independents, who are turned off by the divisive rhetoric of people like him?
Scott: I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. I think people are looking for real solutions to the problems that face this country, and that’s what I’m trying to provide. And if Pete Hegseth wants to help me with that, then I’m happy to work with him.
