[Good evening, I’m John Sopel, and this is CNN.
We’ve received new information on the downing of an Azerbaijani military jet on Monday. The country’s military leadership has officially spoken out about their investigation into the incident.
According to their report, the MiG-29 fighter jet went down after coming under fire while conducting a bombing mission against Armenian forces in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The pilots reportedly ejected from the plane, and both were safely recovered.
In a statement, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense claimed that the Armenian armed forces used anti-aircraft systems to bring down the jet, citing “numerous facts” and “intelligence data” as evidence.
But Armenia has vehemently denied the allegations, insisting that they were not involved in the downing of the Azerbaijani jet. In fact, Armenia claims that Azerbaijan deliberately shot down their own plane as a “false flag” operation to discredit Armenian forces.
Regardless of who is responsible, this incident highlights the escalating tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict has been ongoing since the 1990s and has claimed the lives of thousands of people on both sides.
We’ll continue to follow this developing story and bring you any updates as more information becomes available. That’s all for now. Thank you for watching CNN.
