Ex-NYPD Lt. Paul DiGiacomo testified in the trial of former NYPD officer Daniel Perez, who is accused of using excessive force on an unarmed suspect. DiGiacomo, who also serves as the president of the NYPD Lieutenants Benevolent Association, was called to the stand on Tuesday to share his views on the case.

“The Daniel Perez trial sets a very bad precedent for New York City police officers and it’s going to haunt them for years to come,” DiGiacomo stated. “The Department’s policies and procedures don’t support the prosecution of our officers in this case. The evidence presented only highlights the challenges and perilous nature of police work.”

DiGiacomo emphasized that the trial undermines the trust and confidence police officers need to do their jobs effectively. “There are going to be significant implications for the morale and mental health of our men and women in blue going forward,” he warned. “The message being sent to our officers is one of fear and uncertainty – and that’s not beneficial to anyone.”

The presiding judge has yet to make a ruling on Perez’s case, but observers say the trial has attracted widespread attention and sparked emotional debate about police accountability in New York City. If convicted, Perez could face up to 25 years in prison.
