Utah avalanche rescue: Man triggers avalanche and saves brother buried under the snow

A Man Rescues Brother from Avalanche While Snowmobiling in Utah

A dramatic snowmobiling rescue took place in Utah on Wednesday when a man had to save his brother from a massive avalanche that he triggered in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

The incident occurred in the Franklin Basin area when one of the brothers, while side-hilling in a bowl beneath a cliff band in Steep Hollow, unwittingly triggered the avalanche. The man was able to escape by riding off the north flank of the slide, but his brother, who was further down the slope, was swept up by the heavy snow and fully buried.

Fortunately, the man, who was equipped with a transceiver, was able to locate his brother’s location by detecting only a few fingers of a gloved hand sticking out from beneath the snow. The buried brother was then dug out and sustained only minor injuries. The two brothers were able to ride back to safety following the harrowing ordeal.

The Utah Avalanche Center issued a warning, citing that similar avalanche conditions will continue to be common in the area and will increase across North Utah and Southeast Idaho by the weekend, posing a threat to those venturing into the mountains.
