US Sets Tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China Over Fentanyl Influx.

President Trump Unveils Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, Says Will Make US “Very Rich and Very Strong”

President Donald Trump unveiled new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, stating that the measures will ensure other countries treat the US “fairly.” The tariffs, set to take effect Saturday, range from 10% to 25% on imported goods.

The tariffs come as part of Trump’s economic plan, which also includes extending the 2017 tax cuts and imposing tariffs on all imported goods. Trump stated that the tariffs will lead to a temporary disruption, but that people will understand the move.

The White House cited the illegal fentanyl invasion from these countries as the reason for the tariffs, claiming it has killed tens of millions of Americans. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded, stating that Canada is prepared to respond to any tariffs and warned of “disastrous consequences” for American workers and consumers.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed concerns that the tariffs will increase costs for American consumers, stating that the US should focus on competing with competitors like China rather than attacking allies. House Republicans have reintroduced a measure to permit Trump to impose trade taxes on both adversaries and allies, while Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation to block Trump’s use of emergency powers to implement tariffs.
