TOKYO: US Contingency Plans for Military Deployments in Japan and Philippines Over Taiwan Unveiled
The United States is preparing for a potential military response in Japan and the Philippines in case of an emergency over Taiwan, according to reports from Japan’s Kyodo news agency.
The plans involve the formulation of a joint operation plan, expected to be ready in December, which would involve deploying a US Marine regiment equipped with the multiple-launch High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in Japan’s Nansei island chain, stretching from Kyushu to Yonaguni near Taiwan.
Initially, temporary bases will be set up on inhabited islands in the region, with the Japanese military providing logistical support, including fuel and ammunition, according to the report. The US Army will also deploy Multi-Domain Task Force long-range fire units in the Philippines.
The moves are seen as a precautionary measure in the event of a highly imminent Taiwan contingency.
