U.S. Marshals Capture Suspect in Fatal Illinois Hit-and-Run
U.S. Marshals have located and detained the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Illinois, which occurred on January 19. Juan Jahaziel Saenz-Suarez, a 27-year-old Mexican national who lived in Urbana, Illinois, is accused of hitting Chloe Polzin, 21, and Katherine Abraham, 20, in a crash at the intersection of University Avenue and Coler Avenue in Urbana.
Saenz-Suarez was identified as the owner of a red Mitsubishi Outlander that caused the fatal crash, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on January 20. Authorities learned that Saenz-Suarez was riding an El Expreso bus destined for Matamoros, Mexico, and was located in Milford, Texas, about an hour south of Dallas.
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) worked with the Northern District of Texas (N/TX) North Texas Fugitive Task Force to take Saenz-Suarez into custody. He was safely taken into custody at approximately 9:15 a.m. CST and is being held at the Dallas County Jail, Texas, to await extradition.
The fatal crash occurred when Saenz-Suarez rear-ended the two victims, who were stopped at a red light. Other passengers were injured in the crash. Saenz-Suarez had previously been deported from the United States once.
Urbana Police Chief Larry D. Boone praised the efforts of the Urbana Police Department and the US Marshals Service in capturing Saenz-Suarez. Urbana Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin extended her condolences to the families and friends affected by the crash.
