New Gallup Research Suggests Growing Partisan Divide in the US
A new study by Gallup has found that Republicans and Democrats are growing further apart, with a decline in the number of Americans who identify as moderate. The survey reveals that in 2024, 77% of Republicans described themselves as conservative, with 24% claiming to be very conservative, the highest levels since Gallup began polling the question three decades ago.
Among Democrats, 55% identified as liberal, with 19% reporting being very liberal, also the highest levels recorded.
The study also shows that the overall number of respondents who identify as moderate has decreased, dropping from 43% in the 1990s to 34% in 2024.
In related news, a separate survey from Gallup found that the Republican Party has held a slight edge in party affiliation for the third year in a row in 2024, following the election of Donald Trump.
