Jewish University Regent’s Home Vandalized in ‘Clear Act of Antisemitic Intimidation’

The home of Jordan Acker, a Jewish member of the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents, was vandalized early Monday morning, in what the university has described as a "clear act of antisemitic intimidation." This is the third time Acker’s home has been targeted since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

According to Acker, he was jolted awake by the sound of shattering glass just after 2 a.m. when he went downstairs to find his front windows had been smashed and his wife’s car vandalized with anti-Israel messages. The symbols used, including an upside-down triangle and the phrases "Divest" and "Free Palestine," are believed to be associated with Hamas and have become a symbol of violent resistance to Israel.

Acker and his family were shaken by the incident, which took place while his daughters were asleep upstairs. He called the police and reported the incident, which was captured on his neighbors’ ring camera.

The University of Michigan has condemned the act in the strongest possible terms, describing it as "abhorrent" and "unacceptable." Acker has also spoken out against the incident, calling it "terrorism" and saying that it has nothing to do with the First Amendment or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but rather is an attempt to harass and intimidate Jews.

This latest incident is the latest in a series of escalating tensions between the university’s administration and students who have been demanding that leaders divest from Israel. In May, protesters targeted the private homes of several university regents, including Acker’s, and in June, Acker’s law firm was vandalized with pro-Palestinian language.
