Police Track New Leads on CEO Assassin
A mysterious phone call made by the suspect wanted for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson could provide a crucial piece of evidence for investigators to zero in on, law enforcement experts tell Fox News Digital.
Video footage shows the unidentified gunman holding a cell phone to his ear less than 15 minutes before he opened fire in Manhattan. Police later recovered a phone dropped in an alley that the shooter used to flee the scene.
“If indeed he was on a phone call right then – his phone was live – you can dump the cell tower. You are going to need the search warrant for that and it’s a ton of data,” said former NYPD inspector and Fox News Contributor Paul Mauro.
Mauro explained that investigators can use the video footage to pinpoint the location and time of the phone call, and then use the phone’s data to identify the phone number and who was called.
Former FBI investigator Bill Daly added that law enforcement can obtain additional information from a cellular carrier through a subpoena, including details about earlier calls made by the suspect.
Former New York Homeland Security adviser Michael Balboni suggested that investigators can find information by analyzing the numbers called by the suspect and tracing them back to their owners.
As of midday Friday, the suspect remains on the run. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has assured the public that investigators are “on the right track” and will bring the perpetrator to justice.
