UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on Wednesday morning. The gunman, who was not identified, approached Thompson from behind and fired multiple times before fleeing the scene.
According to police, the suspect took a Greyhound bus from Atlanta, Georgia to New York City several days before the attack and checked into a hostel near Central Park using a fake ID and paying in cash. Surveillance video shows the suspect passing by the coffee shop where Thompson was shot several times before the attack.
The NYPD released still images of the suspect, showing him wearing a mask, and surveillance video of the ambush, which shows the suspect waiting outside the hotel before stepping behind Thompson and shooting him from behind. Thompson was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Police arrived at the scene within three minutes, but the suspect had already fled. The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect’s path, showing him riding a bike on the Upper West Side, more than 30 blocks away from the crime scene. He is believed to have entered the Port Authority Bus Terminal and taken a train out of the state.
On Thursday, police released images of a person of interest wanted for questioning, giving the public its first glimpse of an unmasked man. The suspect was seen flirting with a woman at the hostel where he was staying, and police believe he may have pulled down his face mask long enough to capture a clearer image of his face.
The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward in the case and is asking the public to call the Crime Stoppers hotline with any information.
