The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. at J.O. Griffith High School in Kenton, Tennessee, about 55 miles east of Memphis.

The Cash, Benton, Madison, and Tipton County Sheriffs’ Departments responded to the scene, along with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The wounded students, ages 15 and 17, were taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, the hospitals said. Their conditions weren’t immediately disclosed.

The shooter, also 17, was taken into custody, police said. Authorities didn’t release his name.

School officials shut down the school as a precaution, and a trauma center and crisis counseling were set up for students and staff.

The motive behind the shooting was under investigation, and authorities have not yet released any additional information.

Witnesses described the incident as chaotic and said the shooter was firing multiple shots from a handgun.

The school has about 300 students in grades nine through 12.
