The Futility of the Democratic Party
In 2020, the Democratic Party’s fears about Bernie Sanders led to a coalescing around Joe Biden’s candidacy, which was seen as a transition candidate. However, Biden’s presidency proved to be a challenging figure in electoral politics, lacking a political base of his own and governing by trying to placate special interest groups. Despite this, the party failed to take on any element of the Democratic Party in the interest of the greater good.
To regain power, Democrats must first grapple with the best strategies for a minority party. As the governing party, whoever holds the White House has the upper hand, with the opposition only able to affect policy-making at the margins. Democrats need to make a compelling argument that President Trump and Republicans are failing at governing, reflecting the mood of the country and avoiding the mistakes of Kamala Harris’s campaign.
The strongest message for Democrats is centered on economic security and opportunity. With Trump and Republicans focused on tax cuts for the rich and corporations, Democrats can make contrasts with his agenda on a regular basis. The party also needs to neutralize issues of public safety and disorder by dealing with the immigration crisis and establishing their bona fides for secure borders.
Ultimately, the Democratic Party’s failure to take on its own interests and lack of a compelling message has led to its current state. To regain power, the party must re-evaluate its strategies and focus on the issues that matter most to voters.
