Trump’s critics fear retribution from him in a second presidency.

Many of Donald Trump’s most outspoken critics and perceived enemies are expressing concern about their safety and potential persecution in the aftermath of the January 6th riot. Despite declining to speak publicly about their concerns, sources who communicated with The New York Times on condition of anonymity shared their worries.

Some fear that the Justice Department or F.B.I. could launch internal or criminal investigations into their actions, even if taken in good faith and within the bounds of the law. The appointment of Kash Patel, Trump’s choice to run the F.B.I., who has been accused of keeping an enemies list, has heightened their concerns.

Others worry about the potential loss of private-sector jobs or clients, while some, like Capitol Police Officer Michael Fanone, take seriously the threat of harassment or attack from Trump supporters, who may be emboldened to act on Trump’s calls for retribution.

The possibility of Trump’s plan to pardon some January 6th rioters, which could further erode the rule of law, has only added to their anxieties, leading them to wonder if they will be targeted next.
