President Trump Considered Sending IRS Agents to Southern Border
President Trump stated that he is considering sending nearly 90,000 newly hired Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents to guard the southern border, just days after issuing an indefinite hiring freeze on the federal agency. Speaking to a crowd of supporters, Trump said he may either terminate the IRS employees or move them to the border, where they will be allowed to carry guns.
The proposed plan comes after Trump issued a 90-day hiring freeze for all federal agencies, with exceptions for national security, public safety, and military personnel. Trump stated that the hiring freeze will be in effect until his administration, including the newly-established Department of Government Efficiency, determines it is in the national interest to hire additional agents and staffers.
The President has been vocal about his plans to collect foreign-sourced revenue, such as tariffs, and has threatened to impose tariffs on countries that do not comply with his immigration policies. He has also said he will levy tariffs on all foreign goods, including Chinese imports.
In his inaugural speech, Trump touted his policies as the start to what he has dubbed the “golden age” of America, promising major trade reform that will replace tax revenue with tariffs. “I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families,” Trump said. “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our Treasury – coming from foreign sources. The American dream will soon be back and thriving like never before.”
