President-elect Trump Announces Plan to Rename Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America”
President-elect Trump announced on Tuesday that he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”. Trump made the announcement during his first press conference since Congress certified his election win, held at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Gulf of Mexico is a partly enclosed sea that borders several states, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, as well as Mexico. Trump did not provide details on how his administration would go about renaming the body of water.
In addition to the renaming announcement, Trump also slammed Mexico for the immigration woes in the U.S. under the Biden White House, stating that Mexico needs to stop allowing millions of people to pour into the country. He also threatened to put “very serious tariffs” on Mexico and Canada, citing the high number of drugs coming into the U.S. through those countries.
Trump’s announcement comes on the heels of his son, Donald Trump Jr., taking a trip to Greenland, where he will be shooting video content for his podcast. The trip was reportedly a personal trip and did not involve any meetings with government officials.
Trump’s pledge to rename the Gulf of Mexico is the latest in a series of remarks regarding land territories, including potentially expanding the U.S.
