President-elect Donald Trump Announces Plan to Rename Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America”

Ad

During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, President-elect Donald Trump announced his plan to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”. Trump made the announcement roughly 20 minutes into his press conference, which covered a wide range of topics.

Trump stated that the name change has a “beautiful ring” and is “appropriate”. The move is seen as a continuation of Trump’s past rhetoric attacking Mexico, which he has blamed for the country’s immigration problems.

The announcement has raised questions about how a presidential administration can formally change the name of a large body of water like the Gulf of Mexico. There is no word yet on whether Mexico intends to retaliate by insisting that Baja California gets called something else or if the Sea of Cortez name is also up for negotiation.

Trump’s announcement was met with surprise, as there was no prior indication of the plan. However, Trump acolyte Jack Posobiec had posted a similar idea on Twitter roughly two and a half weeks ago.
