President-elect Trump Weighs Grenell for Special Envoy to Iran
President-elect Trump took to Truth Social to react to a report from Reuters that he is considering Richard “Ric” Grenell, his former acting director of National Intelligence, for the position of special envoy for Iran. The report stated that Grenell is “definitely in the running” for the role, but Grenell himself denied the information, calling the report “made up” on his Twitter account.
Despite Grenell’s denial, Trump weighed in on the report, describing him as a “fabulous person” and “A STAR”. While he did not confirm or deny the report, Trump did suggest that Grenell will be serving in a “high up” position during his second term.
Grenell has previously been rumored to be in the running for various other positions, including Secretary of State and special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Whoever is chosen for the Iran position would report directly to Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio, and would be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing the State Department’s Iran policy.
Trump has described Grenell as a loyal ally, and the two have often appeared together on the campaign trail. If Grenell were to be appointed as special envoy, it would mark another step in his rise through Trump’s orbit, and another example of Trump’s commitment to surrounding himself with those he trusts.
