President-elect Trump Says Meeting with Canadian Prime Minister “Very Productive”
President-elect Trump said he had a “very productive meeting” with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday. The meeting comes just days after Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico over failures by both nations to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs from those countries into the U.S.
According to Trump, the two leaders discussed several important topics, including the fentanyl and drug crisis that has “decimated so many lives as a result of illegal immigration,” fair trade deals that do not jeopardize American workers and the massive trade deficit the U.S. has with Canada.
Trump said he made it clear to Trudeau that the United States will no longer sit idly by as its citizens become victims to the drug epidemic caused by the drug cartels and fentanyl pouring in from China. He also stated that Trudeau made a commitment to work with the U.S. to end the devastation of US families.
Trudeau joined Trump and other officials for dinner at Mar-a-Lago, where they discussed a number of other important topics, including energy, trade, and the Arctic, although Trump did not provide further details. Trump’s camp has not indicated whether tariffs are still on the table.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also spoke with Trump by phone, expressing confidence that a tariff war with Washington would be averted. Senator-elect Dave McCormick posted a photo to X, showing him and Trump and other officials at the dinner table.
The meeting was described as “positive and wide-ranging” by an official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
