Trump Endorses U.S. House Speaker Johnson

President-Elect Trump Throws Support Behind Speaker Mike Johnson in Upcoming Vote

President-elect Donald Trump threw his support behind House Speaker Mike Johnson, stating that he has “Complete & Total Endorsement” in a post on Truth Social. The endorsement is crucial for Johnson’s chances of maintaining his position as speaker of the House of Representatives, with a slim Republican majority of 219-215. The vote is scheduled for Friday, following the swearing-in of the new Congress.

The support comes amidst uncertainty within the Republican Party, with 34 Republicans voting against Johnson’s stopgap funding bill in December and some questioning whether they would back him for another term as speaker. Representative Victoria Spartz said she remains uncommitted, expressing concerns about Johnson’s reluctance to bring up fiscal legislation that aligns with Trump’s agenda. Other lawmakers are urging the creation of a commission to examine budget deficits and a national debt topping $36 trillion.

With Democrats opposed to reducing government-run retirement and healthcare program benefits and favoring higher taxes on the wealthy, Republicans hold the power to determine the future of these programs. Johnson needs to maintain Republican unity to hold his position, but as few as two lawmakers switching sides could result in his failure.

In light of the tension, Trump’s endorsement could stabilize the situation and bolster Johnson’s chances of continuing as speaker. Trump is scheduled to return to the White House on January 20, putting Johnson in a crucial position as their relationship becomes increasingly intertwined. As the vote approaches, it remains uncertain who will ultimately claim the speaker’s gavel and guide the House during Trump’s administration.
