President-elect Donald Trump took a shot at ABC News’ David Muir during a pre-inauguration rally, recalling a claim Muir made during the ABC Presidential Debate in September. Muir had fact-checked Trump’s statement that “violent crime is coming down,” saying that the FBI reported overall violent crime was decreasing in the country. Trump responded that the FBI was “frauding” the public by not including the worst cities with the highest crime rates in their statistics.
During the debate, Trump claimed that crime was “through the roof,” while Muir disagreed, saying that crime was actually decreasing. However, an FBI revision one month later showed that violent crime had actually increased by 4.5% in 2022, with a net total of about 80,029 more violent crimes compared to 2021.
Trump criticized Muir for not acknowledging the change in crime statistics on his show “World News Tonight” after the revision was released. Trump has repeatedly attacked Muir for fact-checking him during the debate while ignoring Vice President Kamala Harris’s incorrect statements.
