President-elect Trump Reiterates Suggestion for Canada to Become 51st US State
President-elect Trump on Monday reiterated his suggestion that Canada should become the 51st US state, just hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his plan to resign. Trump made the comment on Truth Social, stating that “many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State” and that the US can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat.
Trump claimed that if Canada merged with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and Canada would be “TOTALLY SECURE” from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships surrounding them. He also stated that together, the two countries would form a “great Nation”.
Sources told Fox News in December that Trump brought up the merger idea to Trudeau in person when the pair met at Mar-a-Lago in late November. The meeting was held to discuss topics such as the economy, illegal immigration, and a proposed 25% tariff.
Trudeau announced his resignation earlier on Monday, citing the need for a robust nationwide competitive process to select his successor. He has been grappling with significant drops in his approval ratings over issues such as the soaring cost of living and rising inflation.
Trump’s suggestion for Canada to become a US state is not a new idea, as he has previously brought it up in discussions with Trudeau. The idea has been met with skepticism by many, including Canadian officials and politicians.
