Former Senator David Perdue Tapped to Become US Ambassador to China by Donald Trump

President-elect Donald Trump has announced his selection of former Senator David Perdue of Georgia as the next US ambassador to China. Perdue, who lost his Senate seat to Jon Ossoff in 2017, has a background in business, having held executive positions at Sara Lee, Reebok, and Dollar General. His anti-China stance in the Senate has been noted, with a 2019 Chinese think tank report labeling him as “anti-China”.

The appointment comes as Trump prepares to take office, promising to impose new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China as part of his effort to combat illegal immigration and drugs. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has cautioned that a trade war would be detrimental to all parties involved.

Perdue’s nomination marks a significant development in the growing tensions between the US and China. As ambassador, he will have to navigate complex issues, including trade, human rights, technology, and Taiwan. The Trump administration has long had disputes with China over these issues, with Trump previously threatening to impose tariffs on Chinese goods.

The US is the world’s largest importer of goods, with China being one of its top suppliers. Any potential tariffs could lead to a trade war and have significant impacts on American consumers.

As Trump prepares to take office, he has also been filling out his immigration team. He has nominated former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott to head US Customs and Border Protection, and Caleb Vitello as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He has also named Brandon Judd, head of the Border Patrol Union, as ambassador to Chile.
