[The White House budget office has ordered a pause on all federal grants and loans, effective at 5 p.m. Tuesday, marking the latest move by the Trump administration to exert control over federal funding, even that which has already been allocated by Congress.
The decision could impact trillions of dollars and has sparked widespread criticism from lawmakers.
Sen. Patty Murray of Washington state and Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, the top Democratic appropriators in Congress, expressed “extreme alarm” with the move, stating that it will have “devastating consequences across the country.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the move, stating that Congress approved the investments and they are not optional, but mandatory. He added that the grants help people in red and blue states, support families, and lead to stronger communities.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended President Trump’s actions, saying that the move is just a “preliminary step” and that people should wait to see what the White House intends to do.
House members expressed varying opinions on the matter. Representatives Tom Cole, Andy Barr, Blake Moore, and Gabe Amo defended the move, citing concerns about government spending and compliance with federal regulations. Representative Mike Quigley, on the other hand, criticized the administration for using children as “political pawns,” saying that the move will cause harm to many, including community health centers, federal programs, and small businesses and non-profit organizations.
