[Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was ruled out with a concussion after taking a late hit in the team’s game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The hit, which came in the second quarter, was made by Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, and both players were ejected from the game for their involvement in a scuffle that broke out on the field.
According to head coach Doug Pederson, Lawrence will enter the NFL’s concussion protocol and is expected to be “fine,” but the team will continue to monitor his condition. Backup quarterback Mac Jones filled in for Lawrence, throwing for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 23-20 loss.
Al-Shaair’s actions drew criticism from Pederson, who called the play “unfortunate” and said it was not representative of the Texans’ coaching staff. “It’s a play no one wants to see in our league,” Pederson said. “Obviously, you see what happens after the fact and it just escalates. I’ve got a lot of respect for coach Ryans and I know he doesn’t coach his team that way. We don’t coach our team that way. It’s unfortunate. It really is.”
Ryans, the Texans’ head coach, also described the play as “unfortunate” and said he would address the issue with Al-Shaair, who is a “smart player” and “great leader” for the team. The Jaguars are scheduled to play the Tennessee Titans next week, but Lawrence’s status for that game is still unknown.
