The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence on injured reserve after he sustained a concussion in a Week 13 loss to the Houston Texans. The concussion was a result of an extended forearm hit from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who was subsequently penalized and ejected from the game.
As a result of the injury, Lawrence is expected to undergo surgery on an AC joint injury in his left shoulder in the coming weeks. This is the latest in a series of setbacks for Lawrence, who missed a pair of games in November due to the shoulder injury before attempting to return to the field.
In the game, Lawrence exited the field on a golf cart after exhibiting symptoms of a concussion, while Al-Shaair was quickly penalized and ejected for his role in the play. The incident sparked an on-field confrontation that also saw Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jordan ejected from the game.
Al-Shaair has been suspended for three games by the NFL for his actions, which NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan described as “unacceptable and a serious violation of the playing rules.”
Lawrence’s 2024 season is now complete, having completed 60.6% of his passes for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 10 games. Mac Jones, a former first-round pick, is expected to take over starting duties for the rest of the season, completing 20 of 32 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars’ latest loss.
