Smartwatch and Fitness Tracker Bands Found to Contain Toxic PFAS “Forever Chemicals”

A new study by the University of Notre Dame has found that many smartwatch and fitness tracker bands contain high levels of toxic PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” that can be absorbed through the skin. The study detected PFAS in 15 out of 22 common brands, with levels much higher than typically found in consumer goods and clothing.

The researchers found that the levels of PFAS in the bands were “much higher than most PFAS we have seen in consumer products.” The chemicals are a class of about 15,000 compounds used to make products resistant to water, stains, and heat, but are linked to serious health problems such as cancer, kidney disease, liver problems, immune disorders, and birth defects.

The study also found that some brands advertise the use of PFAS in their bands, with those that do containing as much as $50 more than those that do not. However, not all brands advertise the chemicals’ use.

The researchers warn that the absorption of PFAS through the skin is a concern, especially since the bands are pressed against the wrist for prolonged periods of time. They note that the rate at which PFAS move through the skin is unclear, but research has found that they are absorbed.

The study also found that watches with silicone bands are a safer alternative, as natural rubber is less likely to contain PFAS. The researchers tested watches from Nike, Apple, Fitbit, and Google, and found that some brands use PFAS in their bands.

The EU has proposed banning PFHxA, a synthetic chemical commonly used on clothing, carpet, paper, and insecticides, and linked to liver disease. The EPA has found virtually no level of exposure to PFOA, another compound found in the study, is safe.

The researchers urge consumers to be aware of the chemicals in their watch bands and consider purchasing watches with silicone bands as a safer alternative.
