Titans’ New GM Borgonzi Discusses First Pick Strategy
The Tennessee Titans’ new general manager, Ran Canaday Borgonzi, has yet to decide on a direction for the team’s first pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Borgonzi, who recently arrived from the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent 14 years, said that the team is still in the early stages of discussing their options.
Borgonzi oversaw a major roster overhaul in Kansas City in 2013, which included trading for quarterback Alex Smith and selecting offensive tackle Eric Fisher with the first overall pick. He believes that the draft remains the best way to rebuild a team, but is also open to supplementing through free agency.
The Titans may be in the market for a quarterback after a 3-14 season, but Borgonzi indicated that they may not necessarily take one with the first pick. Instead, they could trade for a veteran quarterback and then focus on selecting the best player available in the draft.
Borgonzi is also open to trading back in the draft, saying that “draft picks are our biggest form of currency.” He believes that accumulating multiple picks in the top 100 is the key to building a successful team.
The new GM is approaching the situation with an open mind, saying that he will evaluate every situation to make the best decision with the team’s first pick.
