UnitedHealthcare Names New CEO After Brian Thompson’s Tragic Death

UnitedHealthcare announced a new CEO on Thursday, filling the vacancy left by Brian Thompson, who was shot and killed in a targeted attack in midtown Manhattan. Tim Noel, a company veteran, will take over the role. Noel has been the head of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare and retirement division and has been with the company since 2007. He previously worked in financial restructuring at Northwest Airlines during its bankruptcy proceedings.

Thompson was appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021 and had been with the company since 2004. The shooting that claimed his life brought fresh public scrutiny to the practices of insurance companies and the healthcare industry in the United States.

In the wake of the shooting, many companies took steps to protect their top executives, scrubbing their websites of executive photographs and increasing armed security details. Noel brings a proven track record and strong commitment to improving the healthcare system, according to a company spokesperson.
