As The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never materialized, one of the Marvel writers shared insights about what went down after The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Andrew Garfield is the only Spider-Man actor to not complete his trilogy, with the second film receiving mixed reviews. Alex Kurtzman, who was set to write The Amazing Spider-Man 3, recently spoke about the project’s fate.
In an interview at the Star Trek: Section 31 premiere, Kurtzman revealed that the script was never written, stating, “You know, we never wrote it. I did 2 and that was it for me.” The film’s cancellation was attributed to the Sony hack in 2014 and reports of Garfield’s departure from the franchise.
Had The Amazing Spider-Man 3 gone forward, it would have introduced Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson and explored Peter Parker’s emotional state following Gwen Stacy’s death. The story would have likely dealt with the aftermath of these events, which are referenced in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Although the script was never written, there is a possibility that Sony Pictures could revive the project or incorporate its ideas into a future film. Alternatively, Garfield might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. For now, the future of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 remains uncertain.
