[A 15-year-old was arrested on Friday after he pointed an airsoft gun at 29 children and 10 adults at an elementary school in Miami, Florida.
The incident occurred around 12:45 pm on Friday at the Hialeah-Miami Lakes application academy, a charter school that serves grades K-8.
According to police, the student, who was not identified, pulled out the airsoft gun from his backpack and began pointing it at people in the school’s hallway and courtyard.
The school’s security team responded quickly, and the student was arrested a short time later without incident.
Miracle Kearns, the school’s executive director, said in a statement that the safety of the school’s students and employees is its top priority. She praised the quick actions of school security and the Miami-Dade Police Department for their response.
“We are working closely with law enforcement to review the incident and determine the circumstances that led to this situation,” Kearns said.
The airsoft gun, which is a replicas of real firearms, was recovered, and the student was taken to a juvenile detention center. It is not clear what the student’s motive was, but police are investigating the incident as a potentially serious offense.
The students were shaken but unharmed, and the adults were traumatized by the incident. The school has offered counseling services to students and staff affected by the incident.
