A 25-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon after allegedly attacking a 45-year-old man in an unprovoked attack at the Grand Central subway station in Manhattan on Tuesday evening.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Michael S. Rodriguez, approached the victim on the platform around 9:30pm and began punching him in the face without provocation. The victim, who was not identified, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police responded to the scene and quickly apprehended Rodriguez, who was found to be in possession of a folding knife. He was taken into custody and charged with assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear, and police are continuing to investigate. The victim and Rodriguez did not know each other prior to the incident, and it appears to have been a random act of violence.
Rodriguez was taken to the 13th precinct for processing and is expected to be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday.
