STMicroelectronics Launches New Microcontrollers for Edge AI and Machine Learning
STMicroelectronics, one of Europe’s largest computer chip companies, has introduced a new series of microcontrollers designed for edge AI and machine learning applications. The STM32N6 series is expected to find use in consumer and industrial electronics, performing tasks such as image and audio processing that would typically require larger computers or data centers.
Edge AI uses similar principles to generative AI algorithms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, but with less computing power for a limited, local purpose. This approach eliminates the need to send large volumes of information to a data center for processing and then return the results, saving time and electricity.
The new microcontrollers are designed to enable the processing of data locally, without the need for constant connectivity to a central server. This is particularly useful in applications where real-time processing is required, such as in cars, factories, or wearable devices.
