A voice claiming to be his injured son, Brett, told Gary that he’d been in a car accident while driving a vehicle with a pregnant woman, the police had issued a warrant, and he required bail. Sensing urgency and panic, Gary scrambled to obtain the necessary funding, only later discovering that this was a scheme.
The reality was that these scammers possess advanced technology involving artificial intelligence in voice cloning scams. They generated a convincing replicas of Gary and his son’s voices, capitalizing on high-pressure tactics as well as making it difficult for victims to prove the authenticity or lack thereof
Hany Farid, UC Berkeley professor expert in digital forensic and detecting deceptions, offered insights on his experience with anti-scam education. He explains that voice replication technology has gained sophistication over past years, significantly increasing the scams’ success percentage.
Gary narrates his encounters with these bogus calls, relating his son called him from court, and authorities demanded a prompt payment of bond. The expert, Hany Farid reveals that there indeed are signs where you can scrutinize, suggesting that it, in fact not an AI-manufactured chat.
