Sir Keir Starmer Could Introduce New Law to Block Elon Musk’s Potential $100m Donation to Reform UK
The UK government may introduce a new law to block Elon Musk’s potential $100m donation to Nigel Farage’s party, Reform UK. The suggestion comes amid rumors that the tech billionaire is preparing to donate a massive sum to the party, which would be the largest contribution in British electoral history. However, as a US citizen, Musk is not allowed to make a personal donation to a UK political party, but he could do so through the UK subsidiaries of his companies.
Government minister Lucy Powell did not rule out the possibility of introducing new legislation to block the donation, saying the government is committed to reforming the electoral system to protect it from interference. She stated that the government has no immediate plans to introduce new legislation but is committed to looking at the country’s elections regime, including votes at 16, and making sure the electoral system is robust and fair.
Powell emphasized that foreign donations to UK-based political parties are already prohibited under current law. However, she did not dismiss the idea of introducing new legislation during this parliamentary session. The government is planning to bring forward an elections bill in the next parliamentary session, which could include changes to the electoral system.
Musk has denied planning to donate $100m, but his response did not rule out the possibility of a smaller donation. Last week, he met with Reform UK treasurer Nick Candy and party leader Nigel Farage at Mar-a-Lago, but details on the meeting were kept under wraps. The meeting has sparked rumors about the potential donation, which could boost Reform UK’s chances of success in the next election.
