[Starbucks Baristas to Go on Strike over Collective Bargaining Agreement
Workers at more than 10,000 Starbucks stores across the United States will go on strike in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle starting on Friday morning, a move aimed at pressuring the company to reach a collective bargaining agreement. The strike is expected to spread to hundreds of stores along the coast by Christmas Eve unless a deal is reached.
The strike is a result of stalled negotiations between the union, Workers United, and Starbucks. Since February, the company has repeatedly promised to reach an agreement by the end of the year, but according to the union, a serious economic proposal has not been presented. The union is demanding higher wages and staffing at its stores, as well as better schedules.
The strike is being led by Workers United, which has a bargaining delegation representing workers at 525 Starbucks stores. The union has urged Starbucks to increase wages, improve working conditions, and implement better schedules. Workers have also been frustrated by long wait times and high prices at Starbucks stores, which has led to declining sales.
Starbucks responded to the strike by claiming that the union “prematurely” ended a bargaining session this week. The company said it is still willing to continue negotiations, but is calling on the union to return to the table.
