San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich Thanks Fans for Support Amid Recovery from Mild Stroke
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has released a statement thanking fans for their support as he continues to recover from a “mild stroke” that has kept him sidelined indefinitely. In the statement, Popovich, 75, expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support he has received and acknowledged that it has been a challenging six weeks for him and his family.
Popovich, the NBA’s career leader in wins with 1,401 regular season and 170 postseason victories, has been undergoing rehabilitation and treatment under the guidance of a team of medical professionals. San Antonio has gone 13-13 in his absence, with Mitch Johnson leading the team.
Popovich’s statement read: “This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me. As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way. While I wish I could get back to each one of you, for now, let me say that my family and I are forever grateful. We’re thankful for our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization, and our family and friends.”
Popovich also jokingly acknowledged that those leading his rehabilitation process have quickly learned that he is “less coachable” than anticipated. The Spurs’ team is eager to have their beloved coach back on the bench, and fans are looking forward to his return.
