Southern US Braces for Another Round of Winter Storms and Snow

Here is the article:

Snow and ice brought misery to parts of the United States as a plunging polar vortex brought subfreezing temperatures, thousands of flight cancellations and delays, and blackouts to several states, including Virginia, Texas, and Oklahoma.

The extreme weather, which includes a cold front moving southward, has caused hundreds of car accidents, leading to a power outage in Virginia’s capital, making the water unsafe to drink. In Richmond, a weather-related power outage caused a temporary malfunction in the water system, prompting a boil-water advisory for over 200,000 residents.

Communities in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas are preparing for their own dose of the cold weather, with a low-pressure system expected to form in South Texas, potentially dumping several inches of snow in the Dallas area and the lower Mississippi Valley.

Road crews in the Kansas City area have been struggling to keep up with clearing streets and highways, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, warned on Facebook that two days of straight snow and ice wouldn’t disappear overnight. The great-grandmother, Carol Grayson, who lives in Alexandria, said shoveling through nearly frozen snow up to her knees was “like climbing Mount Everest.”

As the cold front continues to move south, parts of southeastern Georgia and northern Florida are experiencing unusually frigid temperatures, with areas, including Louisville, Kentucky, seeing more snow and ice in the coming days. In some areas, including the central Plains to the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic, the black ice on roadways made transportation hazardous.

Thousands of flights have been delayed or canceled, with more than 1,000 flights into or out of the US delayed as of Tuesday morning, according to FlightAware. Many tens of thousands are without power, with about 200,000 customers in Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri without power.
