A South Korean Court Extends Yoon Suk Yeol’s Detention
A South Korean court granted an extension of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s detention on Sunday, citing concerns that he may destroy evidence in a criminal probe related to his short-lived declaration of martial law in early December. This marks the second time Yoon has been detained, following his arrest on Wednesday, when he became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested.
The Seoul Western District Court approved the detention warrant requested by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), as it deemed there was a “concern that the suspect may destroy evidence.” Under the new warrant, Yoon can be detained for up to 20 days. He is currently being held at the Seoul Detention Center.
Yoon has so far refused to cooperate with investigators, stonewalling efforts by the CIO to interrogate him. It remains unclear if he will comply with investigators during his extended detention. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
